About Me:
Hello there! I'm Claire Hillard.
I like to think I've lived a pretty good life! And also that I am a fairly intriguing writer. Unfortunately, I could not make this portion very interesting without leaving out the majority of my life... Which makes me think that one of the previous statements must be untrue. Either way, this is me!
I was born and raised in Utah with my two parents and older brother. I grew up hiking, fishing, camping, and spending a lot of time outdoors. I was an active Girl Scout for about nine years. This was a huge part of my childhood and before I ended my time as a Girl Scout, I received my silver award. Girl Scouts planted my love for volunteering which has continued to flourish. My brother has always been one of my best friends. We grew up together and well, that hasn’t ended yet. Even though he is now at Stanford, we are still as close as ever. He has always been there to support me and laugh at the same things that no one else registers as being jokes.
For high school I went to the Academy for Math Engineering and Science (AMES). I think that choosing to go to AMES was easily one of the best decisions I have made in my seventeen years. AMES gave me a great education and prepared me for college, but I also learned so many important things outside of the classroom. AMES has a very diverse student body in many ways including race, income, and religion. It was a great experience for me to become friends and interact with a wide variety of people. It taught me how to work with people who share different ideas and gave me a much needed broader view of the world. A lot of schools do not have this experience and I think it is a shame. I loved getting to see how different people live and learning about so many new cultures.
During my high school years I was on the AMES robotics team, a member of the Youth City Council, and did an internship at the Natural History Museum of Utah. I was on the robotics team for two years and held both an assistant and team lead positions for Public Relations and Communications. I was a member of Cottonwood Height’s Youth City Council (YCC) for three years. The summer before my junior year, I began an internship at the Natural History museum. I continue to volunteer at the museum and it has been an incredible experience.
Now that high school is coming to an end, I am preparing for my next adventure! For college I will be attending the Honors College at the University of Utah. I am incredibly excited! I am so excited to take advantage of everything the U has to offer and be able to stay close to home and my family.
Aside from educational endeavors, I have many interests. I love to write and have found that I can be quite good at it. I have been dancing for many years and had the incredible opportunity to perform in four dances in Cottonwood’s 2016 end of year dance concert. I love to read; especially if the material is written by John Green. I like to relax and enjoy my own company and have spent the last few months exploring my taste in music. I have been lucky enough to travel out of the country with my family multiple times. I love traveling and experiencing new things and hope to continue being able to do this in my lifetime. One of my favorite things to do on a bad day or on a very good one, is talk to my best friend who now lives in Michigan. The distance hasn’t held us back at all. She’s still here for me through the good and the bad and never fails to make me happy.
TLDR: I have lived in Utah my whole life in a very good family with my brother and best friend always by my side. I was a part of various volunteering organizations, and other extracurricular activities. I went to AMES for high school and will be attending the University of Utah in the fall of 2016.
