Writing Narrative:
This essay was one of my favorite essays I have ever written and one I am very proud of. This was the first essay we were assigned in my U of U Writing 1010 class. The assignment was to write a story about a time we had to change a literary skill. This was a very loose requirement, meaning that, really, if we wrote a good story that had nothing to do with changing a literary skill, we would still get a good grade. However, I still kept this in mind when choosing and writing about my topic. If you plan on reading the story, I would recommend reading it now before learning more about what it is about. Once you read it you may continue. Done? Alright, I will continue. I chose to write about when my best friend moved away and how we had to adjust to that. My biggest goal when writing this essay was to express to anyone who read the paper, how much my friend, Kyla, means to me, and how hard it was when she left. I wanted people to feel and experience the same things as I did. I feel like I accomplished this. In the process of editing and simply sharing my piece of writing, at least six people teared up or began to cry. One of these people was my professor who said she has not cried reading anyone's writing in over ten years.

Dance Project:
In my dance class we had to choreograph a duet, but there were a few tricky requirements. Before chosing a partner we had to choose a random, innanimate object; this would be the basis of our movement. We could not think just of the meaning of the object (ie. a journal symbolizing secrets and emotion), but of the movement that object makes (ie. a journals fluttering pages, or older, more fluid dancing rather than a cell phone). In this dance my object was an old looking journal and my partners was her cell phone. We had to try to choreograph our dance so that both of our movements made sense with our objects but still fit well together in a collective dance. I believe this shows Effective Communication because dance is all about communication through other ways than verbal, or written mediums. Dancers must communicate an idea or concept through their bodies and the way they manipulate time and rhythm. We had to make sense of movement and be able to express an idea to our teacher and classmates. It took a lot of thought and could also be placed under Critical Thinking. We also had to have our movement over power the song so that the story being told was not the one told in the lyrics of the song, and be able to push past that and make our story and movement more prominent. |

Nazi Belief and Propaganda PowerPoint
I chose my PowerPoint on Nazi Beliefs and Propaganda as one example of Effective Communication. In my English class we were reading a book about the holocaust; Night by Elie Wiesel. So that we could better understand what was going on in Germany at the time we were each assigned different projects. I received this one. I had to explain to my class what propaganda was and why it was so important at the time of the holocaust. Much of what happened was because of the propaganda being spread, even to children, because people believed so full-heartedly that they were doing the right thing. I used a power point so that I could put bits of information on the slides and then explain to the class each point. I also used it to show photographs and examples of the types of propaganda being spread. |

Renaissance Courtier Another example I chose of Effective Communication was a newspaper I made for my AP European History class. I had to take events from the times of the Renaissance and write a newspaper as if it were from that time. I thought this was a good example of Effective Communication because it was a compilation of information and events in an interesting and creative way. |

AP European History Website And finally, for my 10th grade year my other project I will present as Effective Communication is my end of year project/study guide for my AP European History class. For this project I made a website to study for the AP test. For every chapter in the book I did a summary and wrote the main events and key points. This project was very time consuming and was a lot of effort but was very useful for me and I thought it was a great example of this DRSL. Click on the button below to look at it! |
Critical Thinking:
12th Grade:
In my Honors Physics class we completed a, very in depth, lab report. Our final goal of the lab was to estimate the height a model rocket would fly, and compare that to the actual height. The lab was done in a series of steps to come to an end result. This lab is an excellent example of Critical Thinking because it was something I had to look deepy into, find ways to solve problems, recognize when something didn't seem right, and be able to identify what things could alter my results. I had to use my resources to solve problems and come up with accurate results. When I was done gathering data, I had to create a report that was easy and interesting to read, while still keeping valuable information.
Fun fact: My report ended up being 15 pages and took me about 58 hours to complete. |

Under God Essay:
I chose this essay as an example of the desired goals for Critical Thinking. In this essay I had to read a sum of background information on the controversial topic of whether the phrase "Under God" should be left in the Pledge of Allegiance. After forming an opinion, I then had to chose the opposite side and defend it in a well formed essay. This made me think more about the topic and think of different opinions and arguments against my own. I had to find arguments that contradicted my own opinions and argue in convincingly.

Dance Concert:
I chose my beginning dance class's performance in Cottonwood High School's 2014 dance concert; "Artscape" as one of my examples for Effective Communication. I chose this particular work because of the way he had to create the dance. Artscape was the name of the concert and this was because all or most of the dances were based off of some piece of student artwork. My class got to choose which piece of art we wanted and then had to create a dance based off of this work of art. It was quite difficult to create a dance based off of a painting. We had to first think of what the artist was trying to convey and then what we wanted to convey to the audience. We had to choreograph this dance ourselves and got to come up with our movement. We had to think through what kind of costumes we wanted and what we wanted the audience to think during the dance. There were many, many stages to creating this dance; new ideas, ideas that were scratched. There was much disagreement on what kind of music we wanted because it greatly effected the mood of the dance. We had to think through all aspects of creating the dance; understanding the painting, creating movement, creating costumes, and thinking of the mood of the dance and what the audience got from it. It was a very long and complicated process, but it was also a very fun one. This would also fit under Effective Communication because we had to try to communicate an idea or feeling to the audience and try to get them to understand what we were trying to express and to portray the painting. |

Integration and Application of Knowledge in Civic, Social, and Personal Context:
12th Grade:
In U of U writing 1010, we were assigned an ISearch paper in which we would research a topic that interests us. I have always wanted to learn how to make French macarons and found this to be the perfect opportunity to learn how! I knew they were hard to make but I had no idea just how difficult they are. To fully complete my ISearch, I made multiple batches of French macarons. After much research and a lot of practice, I got pretty good at making macarons. This is a skill that I now have and will be able to pull out when needed. Not only can I now make myself a deliciously rare treat, macarons make great gifts and I can make them for this purpose. Below is the essay I wrote about my journey learning to make French macarons.

Internship Resume:
In my internship class we learned how to make interesting and effective resumes. I found this very useful to be able to apply it to my professional life. I made a resume for myself that I can use when needed and know what I would do if I were to make another one in the future.

Biology Project on the Digestive System:
For this DRSL I chose my end of year project I did in my Biology class. We learned about the different bodily systems and I chose the digestive system. When I told most people that I got the digestive system for my project they all groaned and felt bad for me. I responded saying that I chose this system because I wanted to learn more about it. I chose this particular system because over the years I have had very bad stomach issues. In 7th and 8th grade my stomach problems got particularly bad and I was very sick for about a year. I did not gain weight and I had barely any energy to last a day of school. No one knew what was wrong with me and it was a very hard time and we did know when or if I would be cured/get better. After they finally figured out what was wrong and I have recovered, yet still suffer from it occasionally, I was extremely happy. At the time I did not know anything about the digestive or excretory system so I could not help myself. I simply knew that my stomach hurt. Ever since then I have been interesting in the stomach and why mine does not work! I took this opportunity to learn more about the stomach and what else goes on in digesting and excreting waist. After doing the project and the research it made much more sense and the complexity of it surprised me. |
